Wednesday Night Running Club (WNRC) was founded in 2008 by Justine and Tony. The aim was to encourage complete beginners to get active and persuade inexperienced runners to abandon their treadmills and go outside. More experienced runners have incorporated the Wednesday night runs into their training schedules and many of the regulars are frequent Marathon and Ironman Triathlon competitors. The club meets every Wednesday outside World Gym at 6pm. There is no membership fee, just the chance to buy a nice orange vest every few months! Many people come along with a goal to do their first 5k or to take part in one of the Cayman Island Marathon events or just to meet other runners. There is so much experience among the regulars that as well as being a fun time and productive training, Wednesday nights can be a great source of advice and information about running and triathlon. Every October the club holds their annual championship. A series of 3 mile races with a staggered start; faster runners starting last. The time handicap means that for once the best athlete doesn’t always win, instead the format favors the most improving athlete over the three race series. The winner is awarded the Jim Kelly Trophy, named after the inspirational former member who competed for the club in various events, always winning any oldest competitor awards! Justine started running in August 2000 and hasn’t stopped since! She has completed several Marathons, 7 Ironman Triathlons and a 50 mile Trail run. Tony’s exercise life began in the gym about the same time. After completing a 100km indoor row he took up running in 2005. Since then he has completed 9 Marathons, 5 Ironman Triathlons, a Double Ironman, two 24 hour cycle events and a 10k sea swim.
